Summer Isn’t Over Yet at Tinside Lido
There are now even more opportunities for Plymouth’s young people to build confidence in the water, develop essential swimming skills and learn how to stay safe around the city’s coastline, as Tinside Lido will remain open until Sunday 27 September.
The extended season will allow Plymouth Active Leisure to welcome more local schools for swimming lessons, water safety sessions and Swim Safe activities, while also giving residents and visitors extra time to enjoy one of Plymouth’s most iconic attractions.
The decision follows one of Tinside Lido’s busiest and most successful summers in recent memory. Originally due to close on 13 September, the season has been extended after months of fantastic weather, consistently busy sessions and incredible support from the local community. By the end of September, the Lido is on track to welcome more than 100,000 visits.
While that’s a milestone worth celebrating, the additional two weeks are about much more than visitor numbers.
Nationally, almost one in three children leave primary school unable to swim 25 metres, making access to swimming lessons and water safety education more important than ever. The extended opening means schools will have additional opportunities to access top-up swimming lessons and Swim Safe sessions, helping children understand cold water, learn how to float and develop the skills they need to stay safe in and around open water.

“Tinside Lido has always been more than a swimming pool – it’s part of Plymouth’s identity. Extending the season gives us another opportunity to help more children learn to swim, build confidence in the water and understand how to stay safe. For some young people, these school sessions may be their only opportunity to develop these essential life skills.”
Councillor Kate Taylor, Cabinet Member for Finance and Sport, added:
“It’s been an extraordinary summer, and we want to make it last just a little bit longer. Swimming is something everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy, especially here in Britain’s Ocean City, and this extension creates even more opportunities for our young people.”
Alongside school sessions, the Lido will continue to welcome the public throughout the extended season, with the much-loved Doggy Swim now taking place on the final day, Sunday 27 September.
