Gym Etiquette and Rules
These rules are in place to ensure a safe, respectful and enjoyable training environment for all members. Failure to adhere to these rules may result in warnings, suspension, or termination of membership.
Entry:
- Everyone must have completed a health questionnaire and induction before using the gym.
- Members are encouraged to book their gym session in advance via the Plymouth Active Leisure App.
- You will need to use your membership card or band to enter the gym turnstiles. Please DO NOT let anyone else use them, any misuse may result in your membership being terminated.
- Pay as you go members must hand their payment receipt to the gym staff.
Personal Items, valuables and use of lockers:
- Please secure your personal items and valuables in a locker.
- Lockers require a padlock, which members must provide themselves.
- Items left in the lockers overnight will be removed and logged as lost property.
- Plymouth Active Leisure is not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of any belongings.
Equipment:
- The equipment should only be used for its intended purpose.
- Make sure free-weights and plates are put back in their original place when you’re finished.
- Keep noise at a reasonable level and avoid unnecessary weight dropping. This includes pin-loaded equipment, as repeated weight dropping will damage the equipment.
- If any equipment is found to be faulty or malfunctioning, please report to a member of staff.
- In the interest of everyone’s cleanliness and hygiene, please wipe down the equipment after use. Paper towels and disinfectant spray is provided within the gym area for this purpose.
- If you use chalk, please make sure you clean this from the equipment after use.
- Be courteous to other gym users. During busy times we respectively request that members restrict their use to 20 minutes max on a station.
- Young people aged 11-15 years are NOT permitted to use the free weights or plate loaded machines. They may only use the cardio and resistance equipment under the direct supervision of an adult.
- Respect personal space, especially in the free‑weight and stretching areas.
Attire:
- All members must wear clean, appropriate workout attire at all times.
- Clothing must adequately cover the body and be suitable for physical activity.
- Closed-toe shoes are required in workout areas for safety reasons.
- No outdoor shoes to worn in the gym area.
Personal Training:
- Only Plymouth Active Leisure self-employed licensed personal trainers are permitted to undertake personal training sessions in the gym.
- Members MAY NOT bring external personal trainers to the gym, or act as a personal trainer, paid or otherwise.
Photos and Videos:
- Filming, recording, or taking photos is strictly prohibited anywhere in the gym or changing areas without prior approval.
General:
- If you have a medical condition that may put you at risk, you must inform our staff of your condition.
- We recommend that anyone new to physical activity or returning to exercise after a period of absence seeks medical advice prior to using the gym.
- If you are unsure of how to use a piece of equipment you should seek instruction before doing so.
- We do don’t tolerate aggressive, abusive, anti-social or threatening behaviour towards staff or other gym users.
- We have a water fountain and vending machines in the gym area. Please DO NOT drink directly from the water fountain, it is for bottle refill only.
